This guide covers when you genuinely need more than one number, what is counted per number and what for the account as a whole, and how to arrange numbers so nobody sends from the wrong line.

What is counted per number, and what for the account

ItemPer numberFor the account
Messaging limitYes — starts at the lowest tier
Quality ratingYes — built from scratch
Display nameYes — reviewed per number
Business verificationYes — once is enough
TemplatesYes — used across numbers

When you genuinely need it

Three cases where it is worth it, and one where it is not:

  • A real operational separation — a sales team and a support team sharing nothing.
  • Different regions or brands, with different display names the customer sees.
  • A branch with its own identity and a number its customers already know.
  • And what does not justify it: "spreading the load" — load is spread by assignment inside the inbox, not by a second line.

If you decide to, in this order

  1. 1.Let the first number settle first
A stable tier and a high rating before you add a second line competing for your attention.
  2. 2.Label every number unmistakably inside the platform
The label is what prevents sending from the wrong line, and it is the cheapest item on this list.
  3. 3.Set channel permissions per team
A sales agent does not need to see the support line — which reduces both mistakes and noise.
  4. 4.Build the second number’s reputation as you built the first
Start small and with your most engaged segment. A new number inherits nothing.

The mistake the customer pays for

The worst outcome of running several numbers is a customer messaged from a line they do not recognise, reading it as anonymous and blocking it. Blocks are what WhatsApp calculates your rating from — so the new line loses its reputation in its first week. That is covered in the quality rating guide.

And the inbox?

The numbers multiply and the inbox does not: conversations from every line arrive in one place, are assigned to whoever they belong to, and the customer’s record stays continuous across lines. That is what makes several numbers organisation rather than fragmentation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a new number inherit my current tier?

No. The tier and the rating belong to the number rather than the account, and a new number starts at the lowest tier and builds its own history.

Do I need verification for each number?

No. Verification is at the account level and once is enough. The display name, however, is reviewed for each number separately.

Can I use my templates on both numbers?

Yes, templates are at the account level and are used across numbers. That saves a whole review cycle for every new line.

How do I stop sending from the wrong line?

Clear labelling inside the platform and channel permissions. Together they make the mistake difficult rather than relying on somebody paying attention.

Does the customer see one company?

They see the display name of the line they messaged. Which is why each name must be understandable on its own rather than an internal abbreviation.

How many numbers can I add?

The number is set out among the plan features on the pricing page, which is the reference for it.
